David Carnac
David was born in Chislehurst, Kent, and his initial and formative musical education
was in the Bromley Youth Music Service under the inspiration of the late Norman Trotman.
During this period, he studied with Leslie Lake and Peter Gane before completing his GGSM
and Postgraduate Orchestral Studies courses between 1981-5 at the Guildhall School of Music
& Drama, where his teachers were Peter Gane, Denis Wick and Eric Crees. During and
immediately after this period, David freelanced extensively with many orchestras and
chamber ensembles both in the UK and abroad. However, in 1987, he decided that he preferred
to make his living in other ways. He joined the then rapidly expanding financial services
sector, in which he still works, the last decade of which have been running his own
company, David Carnac & Co. Mortgage,
Insurance and Protection Solutions.
In early 2006, and as a reaction to many of his friends' and clients' constant suggestions, he ventured into his loft, retrieved his trombone and gingerly blew it to see if both he and his instrument still worked and if he would rekindle the passion for the trombone that he had in his youth. A year or so later, following a tremendous amount of inspiration from his new and re-discovered trombonist colleagues, he complements his busy business life with performing regularly with many of the leading ensembles and orchestras in the thriving amateur music scene in and around London, including helping run the South East-based large trombone ensemble Trombonanza.
In October 2007, due to the financial nature of his business activities, David was approached by Ben Bouzan and Matthew Parry to become the treasurer of the British Trombone Society following Matt's indication of his desire to relinquish this role. "I am delighted to accept the position of treasurer with the British Trombone Society. I look forward to working within the executive committee, together with the Board of Advisers and regional representatives, to ensure the aims of the society's constitution are fully achieved" said David, adding "I feel the society has a unique opportunity to unite everyone who has an interest in the instrument, regardless of the musical genre and professional status and to further improve the already magnificent standard of trombone playing in the UK".
David will work closely with Matt Parry until October 2008 to ensure a smooth transition into the rôle.
