Joanna started playing the trumpet at the age of 11. Initially, she played mainly in wind bands and jazz bands, interspersed with some orchestral playing. She played in the Hampshire Youth Jazz Orchestra and also ventured into the world of brass banding on soprano cornet. At university in London, she was drawn more deeply into the world of brass bands. In recent years, she has switched to tenor horn and currently plays with the City of Cambridge Brass Band. Despite being a bit of a band geek, she still enjoys playing jazz and swing band music and has taken up the trombone with the aim of being good enough to play in a swing band one day (there’s not much call for jazz tenor horn!).
Joanna has a young son, Austin, and has been trying for ages to buy a P-bone for him; he likes the look of the purple one. When she is not playing, attempting to compose (or editing), Joanna works as a vet to support her musical hobbies.
