The Prize

Don Lusher Trophy awarded by Diana Lusher.

An XO 1632 LT Fedchock model trombone (in either gold or yellow brass)*

The winner will be invited to Korg UK Headquarters in Milton Keynes to work closely with their PR team in sampling further products from XO, Korg, Humes & Berg, Samson & Jupiter.

The winner will also have the opportunity to promote these brands and indeed themselves using Korg's state of the art video suite and may be invited to participate in future events.

The winner may be invited to perform at a BTS event following the competition.

Entry Details

The British Trombone Society is proud to remember one of the world's great trombonists with this exciting competition, now in its tenth year, with kind support from Diana Lusher, which gives young players the opportunity to display their melodic, ballad style of playing. Don was renowned worldwide for his mastery of this genre of playing.

Set pieces:

  • Stardust (Hoagy Carmichael/Bill Geldard)
  • An own-choice piece

“Stardust” is available from the BTS Secretary (secretary@britishtrombonesociety.org) as an electronic file for home printing.

 

General Conditions

Candidates must be 23 or under on 20 November 2016 to be eligible to participate in the competition.

Candidates must submit an unedited performance on MP3 or CD no later than 1 October 2016.

Unmarked audio files must be emailed or posted to arrive with the BTS Secretary, Alison Keep, (D'Arcy Gate, Kelvedon Road, Tolleshunt D'Arcy, Essex, CM9 8EL or secretary@britishtrombonesociety.org) with a separate note of your name, date of birth, and a very brief biography.

In order to maintain impartiality, audio files must not include the name(s) of the performer(s) or any other identifying items.

The competition judges will be eminent professional trombonists.

Three finalists will be invited to play the same programme at the final competition; therefore, candidates must be free to perform at Oundle School, near Peterborough, on the day of the final round, Sunday 20 November 2016.

A piano accompanist will be available at the final, to take place during the BTS East Anglia Trombone Day, or you may bring your own accompanist.

The winner will be invited to perform "Stardust" with a local big band at the end of the day.

The winner agrees to retain ownership of the prize and to not sell or pass onto another by way of gift or otherwise. Should the prize no longer be needed, it is to be returned to Korg UK.

Candidates may request the music for “Stardust” by e-mailing the BTS Secretary, Alison Keep: secretary@britishtrombonesociety.org.

The judges’ decision will be final and binding. The recordings will remain the property of the BTS.

Entrance Fees:
Entrance fee for BTS members: £10.00 and for non-members: £30.00. Fees may be paid via member’s GoCardless Direct Debit account, PayPal to “membership@britishtrombonesociety.org," Stripe Portal or by cheque made payable to the British Trombone Society.
