New teachers at Trinity

Following the retirement of Roger Harvey from the teaching faculty of Trinity College of Music at the start of the summer, Roger Argente (Head of Brass) has announced two new appointments.

Mark Templeton, Principal Trombone of the London Philharmonic will join the professorial staff. And Carol Jarvis, formerly of Bones Apart, will be providing coaching and looking to enhance their trombone quartet and trombone choir potential.

Mark and Carol will join the existing trombone teaching department comprising Graham Lee, Roger Argente, Mark Bassey (jazz trombone), Malcolm Earl Smith (jazz trombone) and Sue Addison (sackbut).

Dick Tyack retiring

Following 17 years in the pit at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, bass/contrabass trombonist Dick Tyack has announced his retirement this month.

Prior to Covent Garden, I was with the BBC Symphony for 20 years, in that other underground chamber, Studio 1, Maida Vale. This was preceded by three 3 years rampaging around the West Country with the Bournemouth Symphony.

Chris Houlding in move to Germany

Chris Houlding is set to take up a Professorship at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, Germany. The position includes trombone teaching, brass ensemble coaching and conducting, and starts this October.

He intends to continue as Principal Trombone at Opera North and Senior Tutor in Brass at the RNCM for the time being, but with a view to becoming resident in Germany in the future.

After many years of sterling work for the BTS, including serving as President, Chris is resigning the role of North Region Representative and applications for this important role are invited. Interested parties please contact Geoff Wolmark.

Chris Jeans joins GUS Band

The Northamptonshire-based GUS Band have announced the signing of Chris Jeans as their new Principal Trombone.

The 46-year old veteran of several top brass bands, including Desford, Black Dyke, YBS and Sunlife is also well known for his conducting of Youth Brass 2000 to European success. A full-time peripatetic teacher in the Nottingham and Leicestershire areas, Chris is also a clinician for Antoine Courtois (Paris).

Bob Hughes voted BTS President

At the BTS Annual General Meeting held on Sunday 8 October 2006, Bob Hughes was voted in as President of the British Trombone Society. The retired bass trombonist of the London Symphony Orchestra was delighted with being given the opportunity to drive forward projects for the benefit of all members.

Lisa Sarasini appointed Solo Trombone of the Fairey Band

The famous Fairey Band have appointed Lisa Sarasini to the Solo Trombone chair as she graduates from the Royal Northern College of Music, writes Brett Baker.

Speaking after her final recital at the RNCM on 8th June 2006, Lisa was looking forward to her first official rehearsal as solo trombone at Faireys that very evening.

I’m quite excited, I have already played with them in a couple of concerts and a recording.

Lisa comes from Rochdale and played and studied at Wardle High School before going to Huddersfield University and had lessons at this time with Jonathan Beatty, she did her masters class year at the Royal Northern Conservatoire before doing a one year diploma in performance. She also plays with Tempus Brass, a brass quintet that won the Philip Jones award last year, and she has helped out Opera North and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra while studying in Manchester.
