Nyman teams up with Moore

Michael Nyman has set a piece for solo trombone and piano, to be given the premiere this Saturday by Peter Moore. This year’s BBC Young Musician winner will perform the piece at London’s Cadogan Hall as part of a Nyman festival.

With the title “If”, the piece is taken from the film score “The Diary of Anne Frank” and has been set by the composer to be accompanied by him on piano.

Stargazer score excerpt

It’s a hugely enjoyable if lightweight piece, almost like film music in its vivid orchestration, old-fashioned tunefulness and unpretentious storytelling. Dove pictures the trombonist, peering along the bell of his instrument, as an astronomer searching the night sky through his telescope,

writes Richard Morrison (The Times) about Stargazer, Jonathan Dove’s trombone concerto, which was premièred in March 2007 by Ian Bousfield. The parts and score remain available for hire only, but whilst it is hoped that a piano reduction is in preparation, trombonists eager to see the music can view the first eighty bars of the score now for free. The first eleven pages of the full score are available to download from the Edition Peters website.

He loves to bounce ideas from soloist to orchestra, or set up shimmering accompaniments over which the trombone launches pensive soliloquies.

Hudson performs Raum in Canada

Nick Hudson is to give the première of Elizabeth Raum’s Fantasy in a new rescoring for Trombone and Brass Band. The performance will take place in Ottawa in June and will feature Nick accompanied by The Maple Leaf Brass Band conducted by Dave Druce.

This is a very exciting addition to the repertoire for trombone and band. Elizabeth has created a very accessible piece which demonstrates her ability to write effectively and sympathetically for the instrument. Dorothy Gates, trombonist with the New York Staff Band has also been instrumental in the realisation of the piece and has scored the work for brass band. Many people will know of Dorothy’s compositions and arrangements and it has been a real privilege to work with people with such enviable talent.

Elizabeth Raum, a native of Boston (Massachusetts) but now principal oboe with the Regina Symphony Orchestra (Canada), is also a very active composer. Described as a “performer’s composer”, she has worked closely on new pieces with artists such as Christian Lindberg, Phil Meyers (principal horn, New York Philharmonic) and Tracy Dahl (Canadian soprano). Her works have been performed throughout North America and Europe and won several prestigious awards.

Warwick publish New Trombone Collective music

Warwick Music have announced they are publishing a series of new music from the commissions and performances of Netherlands-based New Trombone Collective. The New Trombone Collective Series has been launched with the sizeable amount of repertoire commissioned and performed by the ensemble so far. A selection of their new works will be added annually during their three year partnership with Warwick Music.

Steven Greenall, Managing Director of Warwick Music, said,

New Trombone Collective have raised the bar for trombone ensemble playing to a new level. We have been working with them over a number of projects in recent years and it made sense to formalise this into a long-term relationship. We believe it’s the first deal of its kind between artist and publisher in the trombone world.
