Dennis Rollins joins funk band "The Bag Ladies" in Milton Keynes on the 24th for an evening of great tromboning and great Jazz Funk. Dennis joins the band's resident trombonist Phil Cambridge for two sets of "Bad Bone" numbers, original material and Jazz Funk covers.

Performances at the 40th Anniversary International Trombone Festival

Submission deadline: 31 January 2011

Prizes
First - $2500, Second - $1250, Third - $750

Purpose
To encourage composition of new works for trombone ensemble, showcasing the unique and diverse capabilities of the trombone playable by skilled amateur trombonists and above.

The pieces should be accessible and help to popularise the trombone when played for general audiences.

Who may enter
Anyone

Requirements
A work for trombone ensemble (4-8 parts) of intermediate to advanced grade. Three to nine minutes in length. Unpublished original works written after 1 January 2008.

Entry Materials
Full score (one with composer's name and one without) and parts in PDF format. CD or electronic submission with MP3 recording of MIDI or performance of piece.

Performance
The prize-winning pieces will be performed at the 40th Anniversary International Trombone Festival 2011 in Nashville, Tennessee by Bone Therapy (a Nashville Community Trombone Ensemble).

Publication
The International Trombone Association will have right of first refusal regarding publication until 31 December 2012. All submissions remain part of the Bone Therapy library.

Stamp Quartet concert in London

The Stamp Quartet performs on Tuesday 3 August at the church of St Martin-in-the-Fields in central London with an exciting all-new programme.

The Wessex Region trombone day 2010 will be on 19 September 2010 and is being arranged in association with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. The venue is a spacious concert hall at Lytchett Minster School, Post Green Lane, Poole, Dorset, BH16 6JD, about five miles west of Poole in the lovely Dorset countryside.

Registration on the day will be from 09:30 for a 10:00 start.

The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra's principal trombonist Kevin Morgan will take us through a series of warm-ups and massed blows spaced out through the day. This year the music will include some new arrangements with a swing band flavour.  In the afternoon, Robb Tooley, recently appointed to the BSO, will perform Dan Jenkins' Trombone Concerto, accompanied by the St. Aldhelm's Orchestra, conducted by his colleague, Kevin Smith. The day will finish at approximately 16:30.

There will be several trade stands for all to browse and buy from during the day. The Royal Marines have also been invited to provide a stand as they are currently recruiting trombonists. The day is open to both BTS members and non-members, but there is a charge to cover the cost of hall hire as follows:

BTS Members: £10
Non-members: £12
Under 16s and seniors over 60 (members and non-members): £8

stephanie_dyer.jpgRecent Cambridge University graduate Stephanie Dyer is performing a trombone recital in a week's time, as part of the Cambridge Music Festival.

Stephanie Dyer performs with fellow music graduate pianist Matthew Fletcher. The duo has been performing since 2008 and has included a new piece for the combination by Toby Young. 

Next weekend's recital programmes works by well-known composers.

Arthur Wilson passed away peacefully at his home in Muswell Hill, North London on Saturday 10 July 2010. He had been suffering from Parkinson's Disease for several years.

Arthur was principal trombone of the Philharmonia Orchestra from 1951-1979, playing under some of the great conductors including Karajan, Klemperer, Barbirolli and Giulini. Arthur was also a founder member of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and for many years principal trombone of the English Chamber Orchestra, as well as co-principal trombone at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.

Arthur was professor of trombone at the Royal College of Music, London, teaching up to the age of 72. Many of the leading professional players in the UK and beyond studied under his careful guidance. Arthur was one of the most respected and loved trombonists in the music business. He will be greatly missed.

Arthur's wife, Fiona, is planning a private family cremation in the coming days. There will be a musical celebration of Arthur's life in the next few months. A full obituary will appear in a future edition of The Trombonist.

Kneller Hall BTS day and quartet competition

Kneller Hall in London is throwing its doors open to trombonists for a very grand BTS day this autumn. The 17th century stately home based in Twickenham is now home to the Royal Military School of Music, but on 17 October, trombonists are invited to battle it out in a quartet competition and to hear a concert by the Army Big Band, compered by Sheila Tracey amongst other activities.

Trombone Quartet competition
Alan Hoddinott's Four Bagatelles (4 minutes) will be the set piece and quartets should complete a programme of their own choice pieces up to a total of 10 minutes.
 
Prizes will be awarded to the top three places. Presentation of the Kneller Hall Trophy will also go to the highest place forces ensemble. The judges will be Denis Wick and Major Kevin Roberts (Director of Music The Grenadier Guards Band).
 
The competition is open to all that are attending the day, but please return this entry form in advance.
