The British Trombone Society is pleased to invite entries to the fourth competition for bass trombone players, not older than 23 years on Sunday, 18th November, 2018.

The Prize

The Bob Hughes Bass Trombone Competition salver, which remains with the winner until the next competition, and a week hosted by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, working with the orchestra and trombone section to create a bespoke programme tailored to the winner.

Entry Details

The preliminary round of the competition is through the submission of an unedited MP3 of two works for bass trombone. The total playing time should be 12-15 minutes.

General Conditions

  • Candidates must be aged 23 or under on 18 November 2018 to be eligible to participate in the competition.
  • Candidates must submit an unedited mp3 file no later than 23 September 2018
  • Unmarked audio files must arrive with the BTS Secretary, Alison Keep ([email protected]), with a separate note of your name, date of birth, a very brief biography and the title of your own choice piece.
  • In order to maintain impartiality, audio files must not include the names of the performer or accompanist, or any other identifying items.
  • The competition judges will be eminent professional bass trombonists.
  • Three finalists will be invited to play the same programme at the final competition; therefore candidates must be available to perform at the University of Birmingham School, Selly Oak, B29 6QU on Sunday, 18 November 2018 as part of the BTS Midlands Trombone Day.
  • A piano accompanist will be available at the final, or you may bring your own accompanist.
  • Overseas candidates must make sure that the appropriate visas have been obtained before the date of the final.
  • The judges’ decision will be final and binding. The audio files will remain the property of the BTS.

Entrance Fees:

Entrance fee for BTS members: £10.00 and for non-members: £30.00. Fees may be paid via member’s GoCardless Direct Debit account, PayPal to “[email protected]” reference BHBTC2018, or by credit/debit card.
