Steve Thompson is a professional trombonist, composer, arranger, producer and educator whose career has taken him from concert halls and recording studios to theatre stages and the London 2012 Olympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

As a performer, he has worked with artists including Nigel Kennedy, Jamie Cullum, Alison Moyet, Lisa Stansfield, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Tony Hadley, Eric Idle, Professor Brian Cox and Robert Smith of The Cure, as well as performing with ensembles including the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Hackney Colliery Band and London Concert Orchestra.

His work as a composer, arranger, and producer has been equally varied. He has written music for the BBC, Channel 4, Discovery, and composed for 20th Century Fox on projects celebrating the studio’s extraordinary back catalogue as part of its first venture into pure audio. His music has been broadcast on Classic FM, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 4, while his debut album, Hello World, was featured on the Jazz FM playlist for four weeks.

Along the way, Steve has sent music to the Moon, recorded with astronauts, performed a trombone underwater and played the instrument at -196°C, while working alongside an unusually diverse cast of musicians, actors, scientists, magicians, engineers and explorers.

Alongside his performing and composing career, Steve has spent more than three decades teaching and mentoring young musicians and is currently Head of Brass at Eltham College.
